Europe's largest wild palm forest — and the strongest argument for driving to the very end of Crete.
Vai is 24 km from Sitia and 98 km from Agios Nikolaos. The road hugs the north-east coast between limestone cliffs and olive groves — it's already worth the trip. The Phoenix theophrasti forest is a protected nature reserve: you don't walk through it, you walk alongside it from the beach and from the ridge trail to the north.
In July–August, buses from Agios Nikolaos drop hundreds of tourists every morning. Before mid-June or after mid-September: another world. Wild peacocks wandering among the palms, intensely turquoise water, solitude — one of the most singular beaches in Europe.

Practical tip
Sleep in Sitia the night before. Arrive at opening (8am). The ridge trail north of the forest is the best viewpoint — and the least visited.
