Two companies, one backbone: the north coast
Crete's buses are two regional KTEL companies — the west (Chania, Rethymno) and the centre-east (Heraklion, Lassithi) — with modern, air-conditioned, white-and-turquoise coaches that run on time and reliably. Their absolute strength: the north-coast axis Chania ↔ Rethymno ↔ Heraklion ↔ Agios Nikolaos, on the highway, roughly hourly from 5:30am to 8:30pm (later in summer). If your trip sits on this line, you don't need a car — and you'll pay next to nothing.
Airports, cities and Knossos: easy and cheap
From Heraklion airport, a bus leaves for the centre every 10 to 15 minutes for about €2 (cheaper at the kiosk than on board); the Chania one links the city around ten times a day in 30 minutes. In town, a frequent city bus runs to Knossos from Heraklion. For a trip of “Venetian towns + museum + a few north-coast beaches”, the bus does it all — no parking or dirt-track stress.
What the bus doesn't do (and no one tells you)
Be clear-eyed: Balos, Seitan Limania and most of the wild southern coves are NOT served — Balos means car + dirt track or a boat from Kissamos, full stop. Elafonisi has only a sparse, seasonal bus. Samaria Gorge hinges on a single early bus (≈ 7:45am from Chania) and a to-the-minute return by ferry then bus: miss the last one and you sleep there. The south (Sougia, Paleochora, Chora Sfakion for Loutro) has 3 to 5 buses/day in summer, often with an obligatory overnight to return. And in winter, tourist lines shrink drastically. Honest verdict: without a car, aim for “towns + north axis + 1-2 organised excursions” for the lagoons and the wild south.

Can you see all of Crete by bus, without a car?
No, not entirely. The bus is excellent on the north axis (Chania–Rethymno–Heraklion–Agios Nikolaos), for the airports, the towns and Knossos. But the lagoons (Balos, off-season Elafonisi), Seitan Limania and much of the wild south are unserved or reached by only one seasonal bus a day. A realistic “car-free” trip combines buses with a few organised excursions.
How do I reach Balos or Elafonisi without a car?
Balos: by boat (ferry from Kissamos) or on an organised tour — there's no bus, and the dirt track needs a 4×4. Elafonisi: a seasonal bus runs from Chania (≈ 2h10, ≈ €12) but it's sparse; an organised bus tour is often simpler. For both, book ahead in high season.
Do I need to book KTEL bus tickets in advance?
On the very frequent north axis, no: buy at the station window (cheaper) or on board. On sparse lines (Samaria, south, Elafonisi), arrive early and check the last return time. Online booking is available on e-ktel.com (west) to secure a summer seat.
Where do I buy tickets, and is it cheaper at the window?
At the bus-station kiosk/window it's usually cheaper than on board (e.g. Heraklion airport bus: ≈ €1.60 at the kiosk vs ≈ €2.50 on board). Carry coins. For intercity lines, the company's official site gives the live timetable and online sales.
