A dazzlingly white Orthodox monastery clinging to a rock above the Libyan Sea, a few minutes from Elafonisi.
Chrysoskalitissa means 'of the golden step'. Legend has it that one of the 90 steps leading up to the monastery is made of gold, but visible only to those without sin. The building, immaculate white against the deep blue of the sea, is one of the most photogenic on the island.
It pairs naturally with a visit to nearby Elafonisi. The climb up the steps is short but steep; at the top, the panoramic view over the wild south-western coast rewards the effort. Appropriate dress is required to enter.
