Stavros Beach

The lagoon from 'Zorba the Greek'

Stavros Beach

Our method Paid links

An almost circular bay overlooked by a steep mountain, made famous by the final scene of the film 'Zorba the Greek'.

Stavros is first of all this unreal setting: a shallow, calm and warm lagoon, closed off by an imposing rock face that plunges into the sea. The water is translucent and ideal for young children, sheltered from waves and wind. A few tavernas line the beach.

The contrast between the bare mountain and the blue of the lagoon is striking. The main sand-and-pebble beach can be packed in high summer, but keeps a nostalgic charm. Film buffs will recognise the spot where Anthony Quinn danced the sirtaki.

What to know

  • Sheltered lagoon, perfect for children
  • Spectacular cinematic setting
  • Tavernas right by the beach
  • Small beach, quickly packed in August
  • Little natural shade

Practical tip

Come early in the morning to enjoy the lagoon in peace. The late-afternoon light on the cliff is gorgeous for photos.
