Imbros Gorge

Samaria's little sister, without the crowds

Imbros Gorge

Our method Paid links

Samaria's little sister — more intimate, wilder in places, and above all reachable without the crushing crowds of tour buses.

Apr · May · Junbest season

An 8-kilometre descent through a spectacular canyon, whose walls narrow until they leave a passage just 1.6 metres wide. The air is heavy with wild thyme and sage. It's the perfect hike to feel the geological power of Crete without the exhaustion of a 16km trek.

What to know

  • Great for families
  • Dramatic scenery
  • Doable year-round
  • You need to pay a local taxi (about €15) at the exit to get back up to the starting car park

Practical tip

Set off early in the morning before the heat. Bring good shoes and water, and keep €15 cash for the return taxi at the Komitades exit.
