From Heraklion, first reach Sitia (Bus Station A, 4-7 buses/day, ~3h, ~€16).

From Sitia, take the seasonal bus to Vai (~1h, ~€4) — you must check a return exists, especially at weekends.

At Vai, arrive before 10am (parking ~€3.50/day if driving) and watch the single return closely.

⚠️ The traps to know

No direct Heraklion → Vai link: it's a two-stage trip, with a fragile Sitia → Vai leg.
The Sitia → Vai return can be non-existent at weekends: don't get stranded at the palm forest.
Bonus Kato Zakros (from Sitia): ~11:00 and 14:00 on weekdays, 11:45 only at weekends; returns 12:45/16:15 weekdays, 16:15 only at weekends.

Plan B

For the far east, the best strategy is to sleep a night in Sitia, then rent a car: Vai is ~25 km (~35 min) away, and you also discover Toplou, Palekastro and Kato Zakros stress-free. It's the part of the island where a car adds the most.
