There is no marked path. The descent is on rocks, about 20 minutes, with a narrow passage near the end. At the bottom: a closed cove, translucent water, and no facilities.
What we saw on the ground
In July, mid-morning, the narrow passage is regularly blocked by people going in both directions. The ascent is harder than the descent — slippery terrain when wet, peak heat at 1pm. It's not a dangerous spot for adults in good shape. It's a spot that rewards those who arrive early and leave before noon.

The road from Chania airport soon becomes a dizzying series of switchbacks cut straight into bare rock. The dirt car park is precarious — and often full by 9am in summer. That's where the adventure really starts: the way down follows a steep, slippery gully. Trainers are non-negotiable. Forget flip-flops; it's dangerous, and you'll regret it on the sun-baked stones.
At the bottom, the reward is staggering. A zigzag arm of electric-blue sea drives deep into the canyon. The water is cool, bracing, and often sheltered from the Aegean swell. Nimble goats will likely come to inspect your bags for food. The geology is arresting: limestone walls that plunge straight into the water with no transition.
The tiny pebble-and-sand beach vanishes under towels by 10am. There's no infrastructure at all: no shade, no drinking water, no mobile signal. The climb back up under the midday sun is a genuine physical ordeal — bring plenty of water. Access is not advised for older visitors, young children, or anyone with knee problems.
At 8am. You might have the privilege of being alone with the goats — an almost mystical experience in that mineral silence. It's the ultimate spot for total-immersion footage: keep the camera in hand on the way down to capture the vertiginous verticality of the canyon before you reach the water.
