The SEAJETS fast ferry connects Heraklion to Santorini in around 1h45 to 2h30 depending on the season. It's comfortable, clean, and infinitely more logical than the slow boat (8h). The different on-board classes offer varying levels of comfort — our video shows you everything.
Book at least 3 weeks ahead in July–August. Prices climb fast and Business Class seats go first. The late-evening return is often more pleasant — you avoid the heat and watch the Aegean sunset from the deck.

Santorini is a volcanic caldera. The island's geology explains everything: the white houses clinging to the cliffs, the absence of sandy beaches (replaced by black volcanic ash or red pebble beaches), and the unique quality of the wines (the volcanic soil gives Assyrtiko its characteristic acidity).
Tourist trap number one: staying in Oia. It's magnificent but overcrowded and overpriced. Our recommendation: Firostefani or Imerovigli. You're on the caldera, with the same spectacular views, for 30–50% less.
The Walk to Oia: the sunset you deserve
Walk in OIA Santorini — Crete Immersion
The hiking trail from Fira to Oia runs along the caldera for 10 km. Allow 2h30 to 3h depending on your pace. It's probably the most beautiful walk in the Cyclades. The reward is an Oia sunset seen from the trail — before the crowd that arrives by bus.
Practical tips: leave Fira around 3:30pm in summer. Bring water (at least 2 litres per person), sunscreen and closed-toe shoes. The trail is waymarked but steep in places. You arrive in Oia perfectly timed for sunset around 8–9pm in summer.

Is the day-trip return really a bad idea?
Yes — but not for the reasons you've heard. The Seajets crossing takes ~1h45: that's not the problem. The problem is everything else. A 4:30am alarm to catch the 6am ferry from Heraklion. Arriving at Athinios — the port buried at the foot of the cliffs — then fighting for a seat on a packed bus up a vertiginous switchback road to Fira. By August it's already 10am, 35°C, and you're queueing an hour for a restaurant table. You leave at 5pm to catch the last ferry back. The Oia sunset? You've missed it — or you're watching it shoulder-to-shoulder with 4,000 strangers, phone held above the crowd. Result: €150/person, a day on your feet since before dawn, zero suspended moment. Either skip Santorini, or do it right — 2 nights minimum.
Can you combine Santorini with other islands?
Santorini is well served from Heraklion. You can continue to Mykonos or Naxos if you have more than a week. Blue Star Ferries offers budget inter-island connections.
When is the best time to visit Santorini to avoid crowds?
May and October are the best options: pleasant temperatures (23–26°C), crowds cut in half, prices down. July–August: packed, hot, and expensive.
