Crete's finest sunset

Falasarna faces due west, onto the open sea — and therein lies its privilege: it's one of the few large beaches in Crete where the sun sets straight into the water. In late afternoon the day's crowd ebbs, the pale sand turns gold then pink, and the tavernas above bring out the raki. Many travellers build their day around this moment: beach in the afternoon, sunset with feet in the sand, dinner just above.

Huge, award-winning — and never truly packed

Regularly ranked among the finest beaches in Crete and Europe, Falasarna is in fact a run of beaches over nearly three kilometres, dominated by the great bay of pale sand and turquoise water. That's its edge over Elafonisi or Balos: even at the height of summer, the site's vastness absorbs the crowd and you always find your patch of sand. You can rent sunbeds and umbrellas and eat in flip-flops — but a few steps take you back to bare beach. Facing west, it often catches the wind and waves in the afternoon: a treat for playing in the surf and bodyboarding, less so for a calm swim (aim for the calmer morning).

An ancient city at the end of the beach

At the northern end hide the ruins of ancient Falasarna, a Hellenistic port city feared for its pirates. The most striking part: its military harbour, cut into the rock, now sits inland — western Crete rose by several metres in an earthquake in the 4th century. You can still see a mysterious 'stone throne' facing the sea. Entry is free, the visit short, and it pairs perfectly with a late afternoon at the beach before sunset.

Come for the sunset — that's THE moment. Stay for dinner at a taverna above the beach.
Calmer swimming in the morning; afternoons often bring wind and waves (good for bodyboarding).
The site is vast: walk a few minutes to escape the sunbeds and find your own spot.
Plan for shade: rental umbrellas go fast, and the beach is very open.

Where is Falasarna and how do you get there?

At the far west of Crete, in the Kissamos region, about 50 km (1 hour) from Chania on a paved road. A large car park serves the beach. It's one of the west's most accessible beaches — no 4×4 or long walk, unlike Balos.

Why is Falasarna famous?

For two reasons: it's regularly one of Crete's finest beaches (a huge sweep of pale sand, turquoise water), and, facing due west, it offers the island's best sunset. At the northern end you can also visit the ruins of the ancient city of Falasarna.

Can you swim at Falasarna? Are there waves?

Yes, the water is superb and shallow near the shore. But the beach faces west: in the afternoon the wind often kicks up waves, fun for playing in the surf or bodyboarding, less so for calm swimming. For a calm sea, favour the morning.

Should you choose Falasarna, Balos or Elafonisi?

They complement each other. Balos for the spectacular lagoon setting, Elafonisi for pink sand and families, Falasarna for the vastness, easy access and the sunset. Based in Chania or Kissamos, you can do all three on three different days.
