About a dozen kilometres southeast of Agios Nikolaos, on the Istron road, Voulisma — everyone calls it “Golden Beach” — is the finest sandy beach around. A crescent of golden sand, shallow water shifting from clear turquoise to deep blue within a few metres, a backdrop of dry hills and, across the gulf, the outline of Agios Nikolaos. The entry into the water is gentle and gradual, making it one of the most reassuring beaches in eastern Crete for families. It's a spot where you'll find plenty of Cretans enjoying their own beach, alongside many French and Italian holidaymakers — a sign it's worth the detour. Getting there

Free parking, bus stop and access

Good news: parking is free. Large parking areas step up the hillside above the beach, and you then walk down a staircase cut into the cliff to the sand. In high season, arrive early: the lower spaces fill fast and the beach gets busy by late morning. Without a car it's doable too: there's a bus stop on the main road, served by the KTEL Heraklion-Lassithi line linking Agios Nikolaos toward Sitia. Up top, a few snack bars and a viewpoint overlook the whole bay — the perfect spot for a first photo before heading down.

Sunbeds & prices

Sunbeds: luxury on the left, budget on the right

Voulisma reads in two halves. The left side is ruled by the Macrame Beach Club: premium sunbeds at €40 for a set of two per day, or €30 after 4 p.m. — with a posted rule that you can't bring your own food or drinks onto the beds (“for tax reasons”). The right side is markedly cheaper: a sunbed is €6 and an umbrella €3 (a two-piece “set” was shown around €15, now crossed out). And crucially, at both far ends of the beach, areas stay entirely free: just lay down your towel. Prices recorded on filming day (15 August 2026) — they vary by season, location and operator.

Nature & snorkeling

At the far right end, the beach changes character: sand gives way to rocks and the water reveals interesting seabeds — it's the best spot for snorkeling with mask and snorkel, away from the crowd in the centre. There's also a free beach area here and something to snack on, snacks and drinks within reach. Bring water shoes to walk on the rocks comfortably. On the left side, beyond the luxury sunbeds, another strip of beach stays free: so you can find your own corner as the mood takes you — lively in the middle, quiet at the ends.

For lunch, the Panorama lives up to its name: a terrace perched above with the beach and the gulf as backdrop, perfect for a midday break without leaving Voulisma. And on the beach itself, the Macrame Beach Club doubles as a bar-club in the sand for a cocktail or a lunch facing the sea. Enough to make Voulisma a full day, from the first swim to dinner.

In high season, arrive early: the lower car park and the beach fill up by late morning.
