What nobody tells you before you arrive

Most guides rank towns by beauty or popularity. That's the wrong framework. The real question is: from your base, what can you actually do in a day without exhausting yourself on the road?

The E75, the main motorway, connects Chania to Heraklion in 2h15 under good conditions. In July-August, roadworks and traffic can push that to 3h30. Three half-days lost on the road because of a bad base choice changes the balance of a trip.

Another truth rarely shared: Crete's most beautiful beaches (Balos, Elafonisi, Seitan Limania) are in the West or North-West. If you stay in Heraklion to 'see Knossos and hit the beach', know that Elafonisi is a 3-hour drive from there.

One base or two?

The temptation is strong to see everything by changing base every 2-3 days. In practice, on a 7-night trip, two moves cost you 2 mornings of logistics and real fatigue. Result: you see more roads than Crete.

Simple rule: under 10 nights, one well-chosen base. 10 nights or more, two bases maximum, with at least 4 nights at each.

The exception: if you fly in via CHQ and out via HER (or vice versa), a road trip makes sense. In that case: Rethymno as central base for the first half, then Heraklion.

Classic mistakes

Staying in Heraklion and wanting to 'do Balos'

Elafonisi from Heraklion: 3h drive. In a day, that's 6h of driving for 2h on the beach. Absolutely avoid.

Booking without a rental car

Outside major towns, public transport stops at 3pm and doesn't reach isolated beaches. A car is essential for 95% of visitors.

Arriving in Chania in August without a reservation

The old town car park is full by 8:30am. Decent accommodation sells out in January-February. August without a reservation = guaranteed stress.

Thinking 'the island is small'

260 km long with mountain roads, roadworks and summer traffic. A Chania-Sitia crossing (far east) can take 4h30.

Choosing an isolated villa without knowing the distances

A villa with a pool 20km from any town means 40km round trips for every restaurant or beach. Charming in theory, exhausting in practice.

Rethymno. Central position, beautiful old town, beach in town, reasonable prices. From there, Balos in 2h, Knossos in 1h30, Samaria feasible as a day trip. You'll come back feeling you saw Crete, not just one half of it.

If you've been before and know the island: Kissamos for the Far West or Agios Nikolaos for the unknown East. These are Crete's two best-kept secrets.

Is it better to stay in Chania or Heraklion?+

It depends on your priorities. Chania wins for beauty, western beaches and atmosphere. Heraklion wins for Knossos, the archaeological museum, ferry port and flights. If you only have 7 nights and want everything, choose Rethymno in between.

Can you visit all of Crete from one base?+

Technically yes, but tiring. From Rethymno, everything is 1h30-2h away. From Chania or Heraklion, the opposite ends require 3h+. For 10+ nights, two bases are more enjoyable.

Which city has the best walkable beaches?+

Rethymno has a long sandy beach 5 minutes' walk from the centre. Chania has decent beaches 15-30 min by bus. Heraklion has mediocre in-town beaches. Crete's best beaches (Balos, Elafonisi, Seitan Limania) require a car from all towns.

When should I book accommodation in Chania?+

For July-August, good places go between January and March. For June or September, May is still reasonable. Off-season (October-May), 2-3 weeks' notice is enough.

Do I need a rental car if I stay in Chania or Heraklion?+

To stay in town and join organised tours: no. To access isolated beaches and mountain villages: absolutely yes. Most travellers who don't rent a car regret it.

Is Elounda worth the price?+

If you want an all-inclusive resort with spa, infinity pool and impeccable service: yes, it's among the Mediterranean's best. If you want to explore the island freely: no — mobility from Elounda is limited and prices are very high.

Is South Crete really that different?+

Yes. The southern coast is drier, hotter in summer, less windy, and vastly less touristy. Loutro is one of the rare car-free villages in Crete. It's a different pace, a different Crete.

Are there significant price differences between bases?+

Yes. Elounda is the most expensive (5-star hotels at €400-1500/night). Chania is 30-50% pricier than Rethymno or Agios Nikolaos for equivalent quality. South Crete offers the best value in summer.

Is Rethymno good for families?+

Probably Crete's best family base. Sandy beach in town, reasonable distances, spacious accommodation, good dining, moderate nightlife. Suits children of all ages.

Can I fly directly into Rethymno?+

No, Rethymno has no airport. The nearest is Heraklion (HER) at 1h30, or Chania (CHQ) at 1h30 — both equidistant. Choose based on whichever offers cheaper flights.

Which base for a honeymoon or wedding anniversary?+

Elounda for pure luxury (Blue Palace, Domes of Elounda). Chania for the romance of the Venetian old town and boutique hotels. Both work beautifully — Elounda is more secluded, Chania more lively.
