Get to a bus-accessible port: Chora Sfakion, Sougia or Paleochora (KTEL bus from Chania).

Buy the ticket at the port office. Arrive 1h before departure (vehicle: book ≥1 day ahead).

For Loutro or Agia Roumeli (no road), the boat is your only way in and out: time your connections carefully.

⚠️ The traps to know

Loutro and Agia Roumeli have NO road: you arrive only by boat (or on foot via the E4 / the gorges). A missed ferry can strand you.
Some sailings are « passengers only »; weather cancellations are common. Keep a margin, especially before a flight.
Gavdos: tickets NOT sold online (phone/agency on site), asymmetric service (Thu-Sun from Sfakia, Mon-Wed from Paleochora), cancellation above 6 Beaufort. Risk of being stuck for days.

Plan B

There's no alternative to the ferry for Loutro and Agia Roumeli, short of walking (E4). For Sougia, Paleochora and Chora Sfakion, the KTEL bus from Chania is the natural complement: combine bus + ferry to explore the south coast car-free. Always check the weather before relying on a sailing.

How do you get to Loutro?

Only by boat from Chora Sfakion (~20 min, €11), or on foot via the E4 coastal path (~2h). Loutro has no road: no car can reach it.

When is the south-coast ferry season?

April to October, with peak season from 1 July to 6 September (maximum frequencies), then reduced until late October. In winter, service is almost nil.

Can you take a car on these ferries?

On some sailings only, with booking at least a day ahead; others are « passengers only ». For Loutro and Agia Roumeli the question is moot: there's no road there anyway.
