Crete in October

Everyone leaves at the end of September — which is exactly why October is the best month for those in the know. The sea is still warm, the beaches empty out, and the hinterland comes into harvest.

In a word

The connoisseurs' month: lingering summer warmth, autumn prices, and a Crete that becomes Cretan again.

The sea & the weather

The sea holds the heat it stored all summer: still 24°C in early October, perfectly swimmable, especially in the south (Libyan Sea). Days stay mild (23-25°C), but evenings cool noticeably and a first spell of rain becomes possible late in the month. Pack a light layer for the evenings.

What's happening this month

It's the height of the olive harvest: in the villages, nets go down under the trees and the mills run — ask to taste the new oil, green and peppery. Mid-October, the village of Elos (west) holds its chestnut festival. Seaside tavernas start to close, but the village ones stay open all year.

Who it's for — and avoid if…

Perfect for couples, hikers (heat gone, gorges still open early in the month) and anyone who hates crowds. Avoid if you want nightlife in full swing (it's winding down) or if 24°C water feels “cold” to you. In the second half, check that your beach and ferries are still running.

Frequently asked questions

Can you swim in Crete in October?

Yes, without hesitation in the first half: the sea is around 24°C, warmer than in June, and the south (Libyan Sea) is the mildest. Late in the month, swimming stays pleasant on sunny days, but evenings are cool.

Are the sites and gorges open in October?

Knossos and the major museums, yes, all year. The Samaria Gorge usually closes around mid-October depending on the weather — aim for early in the month if it's your goal, and always check the official opening before you go.

Is the weather good in Crete in October?

Most often yes: mild to warm days (23-25°C), clear skies, low rain risk in the first half. The climate tips gradually into autumn late in the month, with the first showers possible — especially in the west.
