Let's be clear: the sea is cold, around 17°C — the kind that takes your breath away going in. Only hardened swimmers risk it. The air, though, is mild and pleasant (22°C by day), skies mostly clear with a few spring showers. Evenings stay cool. April is a month of land and hiking, not beach.

What's happening this month

Orthodox Easter often falls in April — the summit of the Cretan calendar: midnight mass, fireworks, spit-roast lamb on Sunday, villages in celebration. Check the date, which changes every year. In nature, the island is at its greenest, carpeted with wildflowers, and the orange trees perfume the air. The Samaria Gorge usually opens in late April, depending on floods.
