Crete in December

Forget the beach: December is another Crete, green and cool, where you can ski Mount Psiloritis in the morning and pick oranges in the afternoon. The month for travellers who want the island without the tourism.

In a word

Winter Crete, green and real: festive towns, snowy mountains, deserted sites — but a cold sea, short days and many closures.

The sea & the weather

Swimming season is over: the sea has dropped to around 18°C, and the air tops out at 16°C by day. The climate is mild for the latitude, but wet: December is one of the rainiest months, especially in the west, with fine bright spells between showers. On the peaks (Psiloritis 2,456 m, White Mountains) it snows — the sea-to-mountain contrast is striking. Warm clothes and waterproofs essential.

What's happening this month

Christmas in Crete is low-key but warm: the town squares light up, children sing the kalanda (carols) door to door, and the tavernas serve festive specialities. The island is at its greenest, the orange trees groan with fruit, and Knossos and the museums can be visited almost alone. On Psiloritis, the small Nida ski area may open depending on snow: ski in the morning, sea in the afternoon, in a single day.

Who it's for — and avoid if…

For the curious, lovers of towns and culture, those wanting an intimate Crete and a mild-sun Christmas change of scene. Avoid if you dream of the beach, long days or guaranteed weather: days are short, the sea cold, and many seafront hotels and tavernas are closed. A town base and a car are essential.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cold in Crete in December?

Mild but cool: around 16°C by day, cooler in the evening, and genuinely cold in the mountains where it snows. Crete stays one of Europe's mildest regions in winter, but it's far from summer warmth: bring warm and waterproof clothes.

Does it snow in Crete?

Yes, but at altitude: the peaks of Psiloritis (2,456 m) and the White Mountains are snow-capped much of the winter, and it can snow in mountain villages. On the coast, snow is exceptional. The contrast of sea and snowy mountains is one of the great images of winter Crete.

What is there to do in Crete in December?

Discover the Venetian towns lit up for Christmas, visit Knossos and the museums with no one there, taste the festive cooking, wander a green island heavy with oranges, and maybe see snow in the mountains. Rent a car: it's essential off-season.
