March is Crete waking up: the days lengthen, the hills fill with flowers, the air warms — and there's still no one. The last month to have the green island to yourself.
Early spring, without the crowds: a green flowering island, warming air, longer days — but a still-cold sea and the beach season not yet under way.
The sea stays cold, around 16°C: swimming isn't in season yet. But the air warms markedly (18°C by day, more on fine days), the rain eases and the days lengthen nicely. The island is at its peak of greenery, carpeted with wildflowers and herbs. Evenings stay cool. It's ideal weather for walking, exploring and photography, not the beach.
Spring settles in for good: wildflowers everywhere, wild orchids for those in the know, migrating birds passing through. On March 25th, Independence Day (and the Annunciation) brings parades in the towns. Depending on the year, Clean Monday (Kathara Deftera), a public holiday, falls in March: people go out to fly kites and picnic, a lovely tradition. The Samaria Gorge stays closed (opening expected in May).
For hikers, lovers of nature, flowers and photography, the culturally curious and small budgets wanting a green, empty island. Avoid if you're after the beach and swimming: the water (16°C) is still cold, the seaside buzz hasn't started, and big hikes like Samaria aren't open yet. A car remains very useful.
Better and better: the air warms (18°C by day, more on fine days), the rain eases and days lengthen. There are still cloudy spells and evenings are cool, but overall it's pleasant — especially for outdoor activities. The island is superb, green and flowering.
Hardly: the sea is still around 16°C, cold. For very hardened swimmers only. March is a month for nature, hiking and culture, not the beach — for swimming, aim for late May or June instead.
No: the full traverse stays closed in winter and generally reopens in early May, depending on floods. In March, turn to shorter, low-altitude gorges, or to the many hill and village hikes, superb in spring.
