January is all of Crete given back to silence: a green island bright with orange trees, white summits, villages where the one open café warms the elders. The trip for those seeking the real, not the sun.
The quietest and greenest month: nature, culture and rock-bottom prices — but cold for Greece, wet, short days and much closed.
This is the year's low point: sea around 16°C, air 15°C by day, markedly cooler in the evening. January is among the wettest months, especially in the west, with rainy spells and fine sunny days in between. At altitude, snow lies on Psiloritis and the White Mountains. The low, golden winter light is superb for photography. Swimming ruled out (except for the intrepid).
On January 6th, Epiphany (Theofania) is a highlight: in every port, the priest throws a cross into the icy sea and young swimmers dive to retrieve it — a very Cretan spectacle, in Heraklion, Chania or the coastal villages. People still eat the New Year vasilopita, with its lucky hidden coin. The island is a vivid green, the citrus is being harvested, and the archaeological sites are yours alone.
For long-haul travellers, lovers of winter nature, photography and culture, and those wanting the island to themselves at rock-bottom prices. Absolutely avoid for a beach holiday: cold sea, short days, frequent rain and many resorts closed. Town base, car and warm clothes mandatory.
Mild for Europe but cool and wet: around 15°C by day, colder in the evening, with rainy spells (especially in the west) between fine sunny days. It snows in the mountains. It's far from the beach image, but the island is green and luminous.
Very few: it's the quietest month of the year, with minimal visitor numbers. You'll have the sites, museums and towns almost to yourself, and prices (lodging, car) are at their lowest. In return, many seafront hotels and tavernas are closed.
On January 6th (Theofania), a major Orthodox feast: in the ports, the priest throws a cross into the sea and swimmers dive to retrieve it, despite the cold. It's one of the most authentic moments to experience if you visit in January.
