The sea & the weather

The sea is delicious, around 26°C, and the sky utterly cloudless — zero rain. But the air hits 35°C at its peak, and the midday sun is crushing: organise your days like the Cretans — beach and sightseeing early morning or late afternoon, nap or shade between 1 and 5 p.m. On the north coast the meltemi often blows hard: welcome against the heat, but it stirs the sea and can disrupt the boats to Balos.

What's happening this month

Crete is in full ferment: every summer festival is in full swing, the tavernas overflow, the beaches buzz into the evening. It's also the peak of the paniyíria, those religious-popular village feasts where people dance and eat until dawn — the real Crete, if you know how to find them. Book hotels, car and excursions (Balos, Santorini) far ahead: everything fills up.

For those who want guaranteed summer, buzz, nightlife and a warm sea — and accept the crowds and high prices. Avoid if you flee heat (35°C), crowds or travel on a tight budget. Imperative: book everything ahead and get an air-conditioned car.
