Access & position
About 1 h from Heraklion airport (~65 km) by the main road. It's the eastern base: Spinalonga and the Mirabello Gulf immediately at hand, the Lassithi plateau and the far east (Vai, Sitia) reachable on a day trip. The island's west (gorges, Balos), however, means over 3 h of driving — save it for a split stay.

Is Elounda expensive?
Yes, it's Crete's most upscale destination: it holds the island's highest concentration of five-star resorts, with private villas and pools, favoured for honeymoons. There are more affordable options around the village too, but Elounda remains, on average, the island's priciest area.
Can you visit all of eastern Crete from Agios Nikolaos?
Yes: it's the ideal base for the east. Spinalonga and the Mirabello Gulf are immediately at hand, the Lassithi plateau (windmills, Zeus's cave) is under an hour away, and the far east (Vai and its palm grove, Sitia) is reachable on a day trip. The west, however, is too far for a day.
