Let's be direct: Heraklion isn't a beach city, it's Crete's hub — airport, port, Knossos and the island's greatest museum. You sleep here for a specific reason, not to laze about. Here's how to use it well.
Book in Heraklion ↗A hub, not a beach: perfect for 1-2 nights (Knossos, museum, ferry), not for a beach holiday. For the beach, sleep in Ammoudara or further out. Airport in the city.
Around Lions Square and 25th-August Street: walking distance from the Archaeological Museum (Crete's most important, after Athens'), the Venetian walls and the ferry port. The ideal base for 1 or 2 culture-focused nights, before or after a crossing. Real urban life, reasonable prices, but no beach.
See available stays ↗Heraklion's beach resort, immediately west: a long sandy beach and hotels, 10-15 minutes from the centre. The compromise for those who want the beach while keeping Knossos and the airport within reach. Without an old town's charm, but practical.
See available stays ↗25-35 km east, the north's big tourist zone: family resorts, water parks, and the intense nightlife of Malia. Plenty of choice and buzz, but very busy in summer and short on authenticity. Handy as a beach base within an hour of Knossos and the airport.
See available stays ↗A short cultural stop (Knossos, Archaeological Museum), an arrival or departure by plane or ferry, and the pivot point of a split stay between the island's west and east.
A charming beach holiday: the city itself has no beach and its atmosphere is more urban than picturesque. For charm, prefer Chania or Rethymno; for the beach, sleep outside the centre.
Heraklion airport (HER), Crete's largest, is on the city's doorstep, and the port links Athens and the Cyclades (Santorini) by ferry. Knossos is just 5 km away. It's the island's most convenient entry and exit point, and the natural hinge between west and east.
Yes, but with the right expectations: it's the island's hub (airport, ferry, Knossos, Archaeological Museum), perfect for 1 or 2 cultural or logistical nights. It's not a beach-holiday destination — for that, prefer Rethymno, Chania or a beach resort.
The historic centre is ideal: Knossos is only 5 km away (15-20 min by city bus or taxi), and you're also walking distance from the Archaeological Museum, whose Minoan frescoes perfectly complement the site visit. Book early morning to avoid heat and crowds.
Not in the centre itself. The nearest beach is Ammoudara, just west (10-15 min), with a long stretch of sand and hotels. Further east, Hersonissos and Malia offer resorts and nightlife. For a real beach stay, it's better to sleep outside the city.
