The best of both worlds: an urban sandy beach with its fish tavernas, a 10-minute walk from the Venetian harbour. Calmer and more affordable than the old town, ideal for families or anyone who wants to swim without giving up the city.

Resorts · beaches · nightlife

The beach strip 8-12 km west: long sandy beaches, big hotels and all-inclusives, and the nightlife concentrated in Platanias. Perfect for a classic beach holiday, but far from the old town's charm: plan on a car or bus for the centre.

Those who want a big beach at the hotel's doorstep with no compromise (aim for the west or a resort), or who plan to explore the east — Chania is at the far west, far from Heraklion and Lassithi.

Access & position

Chania airport (CHQ) 15 km (20 min). It's the best base for the west: Balos and Elafonisi beaches, the Samaria Gorge, Sfakia — all within reach. Reckon on 2.5-3 h of driving, though, to reach Heraklion or the east.

Do you need a car if you stay in Chania?

Not for the city itself: the old town and Nea Chora are entirely walkable, and the airport is just 20 minutes away. A car does become very useful for exploring the western beaches (Balos, Elafonisi) and the gorges. Many rent a car for just 2-3 days of excursions.

Is Chania a good choice for seeing all of Crete?

It's the best base for the west, but the island is big: Heraklion and Knossos are 2.5 h away, the east (Agios Nikolaos, Vai) over 3 h. For a first trip aiming to see everything, many opt for a split stay: a few nights in Chania, then a few nights further east.
