⚠️ The traps to know

The Sfakia road is very winding: bring something for motion sickness if you're prone to it.
It's also the Samaria return point: in the late afternoon, the 18:30 bus (timed to the ferry) is often full — book in high season.
Loutro, just nearby, has no road: reach it only by boat from Chora Sfakion (~20 min) or on foot via the E4.

Plan B

By car, the Sfakia road is an experience in itself (~1h15-1h30 from Chania). The equivalent taxi is expensive (€55-85). For Loutro, a car is useless beyond Chora Sfakion: it's boat or trail.
