⚠️ The traps to know

The classic trap: looking for the bus at the wrong station. It has changed sides. The rule « A for the north, B for the south », repeated by almost every guide, no longer holds since June 2026: Matala leaves from Station A.
The ride is long (~2h): leave early to enjoy the day, and keep a margin for the return.
Combining with Phaistos/Gortyn (via Moires), a car becomes clearly more practical.

Plan B

To combine Matala with the Messara sites (Phaistos, Gortyn) on the same day, a car is the way. A taxi from Heraklion is costly given the distance. The bus stays unbeatable for a simple beach day.
