Agios Nikolaos is magnificent between 8am and 10am. After that, the cruise coaches pour in their passengers and the town changes face entirely. This is not a conventional tourist guide — it's an avoidance schedule and a map of escapes into eastern Crete that nobody shows you.
The town: getting the timing right
Arrive before 09:30. The inner lake (Voulismeni), the cobbled streets of the upper quarter, and the waterfront are bathed in perfect light and almost empty. Have your coffee at one of the kafeneions on the lakeside.
Between 10am and 4pm: avoid the centre. This is when tourist flow is at its peak. Use that time to visit Elounda or Spinalonga (mornings are already calmer there).

Elounda is 11 km north. Take the coastal road (not the national road) to hug the gulf. The ferry to Spinalonga leaves every 30 minutes from Elounda — go before 10am to avoid the ticket queue.
Spinalonga is the old Venetian leper colony. The visit takes 45 minutes to an hour. Bring water — no cafeteria on the island. The late-afternoon return offers the best light on the fortress.
