In April 2025, Spinalonga's entry jumped from €8 to €20 — a 150% rise. The direct effect: attendance fell by about half, some Elounda boats going from 45–50 passengers to a dozen. Good news, fewer people on the island; bad, the ticket is dear. For a family of four, the « simple » DIY visit now tops €120. That's exactly what makes organised packages competitive: once the €20 entry is bundled in, the room to do it cheaper yourself shrinks.
What the product page won't tell you
Spinalonga isn't just a pretty Venetian fortress on the water: it's Europe's last leper colony, closed only in 1957. You land where the patients landed, pass through « Dante's Gate » that opened only one way, walk past the houses of a community that eventually organised itself, ran shops, lived. Without that story, you see only stones and a view. That's why the guide isn't a luxury here: it turns a 40-minute stroll into the one story that gives the island meaning. The traps to know
• The €20 entry is almost never included in a « boat-only » fare: check before you pay. Tell Elounda town apart from the pier: departures are from the seafront. No shade or reliable canteen on the island: water, hat, good shoes. In summer, the first and last departures are the least crowded. EU student/senior discount possible — keep ID on you.

Can I visit Spinalonga without an organised tour?
Yes: reach Plaka or Elounda by car/bus, take a shuttle boat (€10–16 from Plaka), pay the €20 entry on site. It's the cheapest, but you'll have no guide — and the island loses a lot without the story.
